Abandoned Dog Embarks On Epic Journey Home With Heroic Volunteer

A dog named Zimba has been on an epic road trip with a man who is being hailed a hero. In late November, Zimba found himself in Ridgely, Maryland – 1300 miles away from his home in Wichita, Kansas. Zimba’s embedded microchip, which thankfully included up-to-date contact information, led staff at the Caroline County Humane Society to the “stray” dog’s owner, who shared his unfortunate story.

According to the animal shelter, Zimba wound up in Maryland after going on a trip with his owner’s boyfriend. Unfortunately, while far away from home, the couple broke up and Zimba was abandoned. On December 5, the Caroline County Humane Society recounted what they were told:

His mom’s boyfriend left Kansas to come to Maryland for a brief stay with their dog. However while he was here, the couple broke up. And the “now ex-boyfriend” abandoned Zimba… hat’s his name we discovered…. He would not return her phone calls. Zimba‘s mom had been searching for Zimba and wanted him home. She was thrilled to hear he was safe.

The mystery of where Zimba belonged was solved, but a large problem remained…how to get him all the way back home to his owner? The animal shelter had explored several options, but none of them panned out. Fortunately, one generous man offered to make Zimba’s journey home possible; the shelter explained:

Enter our hero. Zach.. who actually used to work at the Caroline County Humane Society. Zach stepped up and offered to drive Zimba all the way to Wichita. The road trip and the adventures of Zach and Zimba begins today.

The shelter added:

Zach is doing this strictly as a volunteer, asking for nothing.. However we are incredibly grateful and need to try to raise money to cover his gas, tolls, and other expenses incurred.

Since December 5, followers of the animal shelter’s Facebook page have been receiving updates from Zach Holt as he journeys cross-country with his canine sidekick. On Wednesday, the moment everyone had been eagerly waiting for finally arrived – Zimba made it home to his owner.

The animal shelter posted:

Zimba … safe and content. We would like to once again thank all of you who have followed, supported, donated and cheered on Zach and Zimba during their awesome adventure. And, of course, we can never thank Zach enough for driving all the way from Ridgely, MD to Wichita, KS to make one family’s…. and one dog’s… Christmas wish come true. There truly is no place like home.

Hopefully we can all take a lesson from this… as Zach said in his interview, using the words of his friend Ben Cahall…. we should all JUST TRY. We can all make a difference. No matter how large or how small. And remember: microchips do work! Zimba would never have found his way home without his…and his mom had properly registered it and kept information current! Happy life, Zimba! Safe travels home, Zach Holt!
