Although pets aren’t normally found on cruise ships, when Hurricane Irma was bearing down on Miami, a cruise line based in that city used one of their largest ships to evacuate more than 1,500 employees and their pets.
Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas opened their cabins to employees, their families and their pets, all for free! A spokesperson said,
“We knew many of our South Florida employees would need a safe place to ride out the storm… it was just the right thing to do.”
The Enchantment crew organized a ‘yappy hour’ for a couple of dozen dogs and their owners, none of whom would have considered leaving their furry family members behind.
Following the devastation of Irma, the cruise line ramped up their humanitarian efforts in the Caribbean for both people and pets! They sent their Adventure of the Seas to St. Maarten to deliver supplies and pick up evacuees. Majesty of the Seas stopped off in St. Thomas and is heading for St Maarten as well. Empress of the Seas will be mobilized to Key West, Florida, if needed.
And a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean reports that the cruise line is working with the Petco Foundation and other groups to arrange drop-offs of pet supplies in stricken areas! If you’d like to help, please click on this link.
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has committed to match donations up to $1 million to aid Hurricane Irma relief efforts.
