Walk through almost any animal shelter and the vast majority of dogs you’ll find there will be mixed breeds.  And the majority of these will be ones the shelter has identified as being pit bull mixes.  Usually there’s no DNA test given; these dogs are just labeled as such, based on general visual characteristics.  You know the saying, ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’? These dogs are all judged within seconds of them arriving through the shelter doors.

And that judgment, because of ill-informed, preconceived notions

regarding bully breeds, can be a death sentence for these dogs.  It limits the number of people who can adopt them, even if they want to give them a home, because of breed restrictions where they live.  Imagine being labeled ‘dangerous’ merely because of the shape of your head.

According to the ASPCA,  this ‘quick fix’ of Breed-Specific-Legislation (BSL),  legislating what breeds of dogs should be banned from any community is highly discriminatory and not based on any factual studies. Even the Center for Disease Control (CDC) strongly opposes BSL . Many states, including NY, TX and IL, who have outlawed the practice of BSL, focus instead on identifying, tracking and regulating specific dogs, a much more accurate procedure.

To help increase the adoptability of these wonderful dogs, shelters hold special adoption events, highlighting the training they have received, their kid-cat-dog-friendly qualities. Bringing them out of what can be a frightening shelter atmosphere, into a fun adoption-friendly

environment.  A place where potential adopters can see what a dog is really like, when removed from the confines of the one room where it sleeps, eats and defecates every day.

Recognizing the unfair perception predicament these pets face, a Baldwin Park, CA group, Pitbulls of the Baldwin Park Shelter, have set aside this weekend for a special adoption event, ‘Summer of Love-a-Bulls‘.  It will be held from 10AM to 4PM at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center, 4275 Elton Street, in Baldwin Park.

The organizers want to remind adopters that for the best outcome, you need to have all members of the family present to meet prospective dogs prior to adoption so we can make sure the kids and the dogs are comfortable with each other.’

They’ll have adoption specialists and pit bull experts from LARPBO, Los Angeles Responsible Pit Bull Owners, on site. According to Sammi, LARPBO’s coordinator for this event,  their group will be able to answer questions that potential adopters have and, more importantly, let adopters know LARPBO will provide post-adoption support by way of their online community and services: low-cost training at a nominal $15 per class and free pack walks.

If you’re worried about the safety of these adoptable animals, afraid they might get into the wrong hands, be assured that, according to Pit Bulls of the Baldwin Park Shelter,

all adopters are required to complete a written application and an interview prior to adoption. Their addresses are also checked for previous complaints and pet issues. Our staff and volunteers are very careful screening adopters.’

Bully breeds are as varied as their owners; they come in all colors, shapes and sizes.  Some are shy, some are outgoing.  All deserve kindness, compassion and love.  You would be wrong to prejudge a dog

owner simply by how they look; please give the same love to these dogs. Nine times out of ten, their human will tell you the same thing:

once you go bully breed, you don’t go back!

Throughout this story you’ve seen photos of some of the available pitties at Baldwin Park ACC, such as Ryder, who is featured above, with clickable

I’ve never met a Pittbull who wasn’t a sweet, gentle being. It sounds like a great event. I especially love that the potential owners must go through a background check prior to adoption. It’s heart wrenching to imagine one of these precious baby going home with someone who has ill intentions. It’s so inspiring knowing there are people who care so much for animals. I hope the event is a huge success!
