Dog Who Was Adopted After 11 Years In Animal Shelter Has Passed Away

Rest in peace Olive

A dog, who spent an unprecedented 11 years in a New York area animal shelter, has passed away. Olive, a pit bull mix, called the Yonkers Animal Shelter home for over a decade before she was finally adopted into a wonderful home nearly two years ago.

On Wednesday, Facebook fans of the beloved senior dog learned about her passing in a brief status update citing a beautiful quote:

“Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality.

On the same day, the animal shelter which lovingly cared for Olive for so many years alerted its Facebook followers to the sad news:

“Don’t cry because it’s over , smile because it happened ” Today I think many of us lost a piece of our heart 💔 Through many tears and with aching hearts we must share with you the passing of our much beloved former resident Olive.”

And commended Olive’s parents for giving the long-overlooked dog the second chance that she deserved:

“To Olive‘s parents, thank you for being such wonderful people and for giving Olive a chance at a loving life and family. You are an inspiration to what we all should aspire to be. We at the shelter find solace in the life she had these past almost 2 years. Olive crossed.Knowing a lifetime of love and belonging that beyond made up for all the years she waited.

She got to live the life we all had prayed for and dreamed of for her. Our deepest Forever gratitude to team Olive for all you gave her. Thank you for sharing all of Olive‘s adventures! You have put more smiles on people’s faces than you can ever imagine! Our heart breaks for you.”

Though the years, regular users of social media saw Olive time and again as various news outlets covered her “overlooked dog needs a home” stories. Olive struggled to find the right home because she had “behavioral challenges” and required an adopter with a special “skill set.” When she finally found a wonderful home, with an amazing and perfect-for-Olive owner, her adoption success story hit “viral” status.

In light of Olive’s special story, the Yonkers Animal Shelter issued a special request to individuals who are considering adoption:

There are so many Olive‘s waiting in shelters and rescues all over this country. Perhaps next time you are looking for a new family member consider adopting the shelter animal there the longest, maybe the one who is not the prettiest, the oldest one or the one hiding in a corner, one who is not perfect but may just be perfect for you. The one who needs you most or perhaps you will find out that you need them more. To quote Olive‘s mom. . .
Young or old, playful or shy, feisty or fresh they all deserve a chance at walking out of those shelter doors one last time into the arms and lives of our forever families.
RIP Olive you , your antics and adventures will be missed every day.

Rest in peace Olive – you were loved.
