Going to Maui? Adopt a Beach Buddy for the Day!

Beach Buddies

What’s better than a day at the beach? A day at the beach with a dog! Thanks to the Maui Humane Society’s Beach Buddies Visitor Program, island visitors can enjoy the company of an adoptable four-legged friend while strolling on the beach, or exploring the island.

Visitors who would like to spend time with a shelter dog can enjoy outings on Wednesdays and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The shelter first provides visitors with a brief “safety talk,” and then the dog chosen to be checked out for a day (aka Beach Buddy) is given a bath. Participants are provided with a backpack full of supplies (drinking water/dish, poo bags, treats, towels, emergency contact information, Beach Buddies profile cards to share, and an “adopt me” harness and leash) to ensure that the day is more fun, than fuss.

After hours of playing on the beach, or exploring dog-friendly hiking areas, participants can return their dog-for-a-day pal, knowing that they have provided a homeless shelter dog with much-needed socializing, as well as fresh air and fun.

Of Note – the shelter recommends that visitors sign up at least 48 hours in advance to get “first pick” of dogs who are available for that week’s outing.
