More than 1,900 Shelter Pets Got New Homes At Epic Adoption Event

Epic Adoption Event

Empty kennel runs can be found at dozens of animal shelters in Michigan today thanks to an epic adoption event which was held on October 22. The BISSELL Pet Foundation sponsored the Empty the Shelters Event and it was a resounding success.

The event, which was supported by PetSmart Charities and the Offield Family Foundation, was expected to result in at least 1,200 adoptions, but those expectations were met and exceeded with a record setting 1,944 adoptions. The BISSELL Pet Foundation commented on the amazing success of the event:

We are still pinching ourselves!  On October 22nd, BISSELL Pet Foundation set out to make 1200 adoptions possible across the state of Michigan and (drumroll please) we are thrilled to report that 1944 pets were adopted out with more reporting yet to come!  This means more than 3800 lives were saved by making room in shelters for even more pets to get a second chance at life.

The massive adoption event allowed families to take home a new companion for simply the price of the pet licensing fee. In addition to a wonderful new four-legged friend, adopters were given an AdoptBox to help make their transition to pet ownership just a bit easier (read more here).

Those worried that the pets were simply “given away” to anyone who walked in can rest easy knowing that requirements, including the completion of adoption applications, still had to be met.

Though many dogs are happily melding into their new homes today, some are still waiting for their chance to be part of a family. According to the BISSELL Pet Foundation, Molly, a bulldog mix, was passed by on the big adoption day. Molly, who is believed to be around four years of age, has been patiently waiting for two years for someone to adopt her from the Harbor Humane Society. Kathy Bissell and the entire Bissell company are to be commended for their hands on in saving the lives of animals in shelters and improving shelter conditions – they sponsor the TV show “Save Our Shelter”. I have adopted and now have 2 ex-racing Greyhounds, 7 cats adopted as adults so ages unknown and 9 exotic birds unwanted. To me adoption is the only way to go – and please always spay and neuter your companion animals.

This is awesome…..I have adopted all my fur kids….it needs to be affordable for people to adopt…some kennels and rescues charge way too much money …and the application process sometimes intimadates people from adopting…I understand why the fee and application but if we could work together to find an affordable process it would save many more lives both human and Animal..just my thoughts ….
