Shelter Me: Hearts & Paws (Episode 6)

I was recently given the opportunity to watch the upcoming national PBS show “Shelter Me: Hearts & Paws” that premieres on May 22nd. Filmmaker Steven Latham created the “Shelter Me” series because he wants communities to get involved with their local animal shelters by adopting, fostering, donating, volunteering and/or by networking shelter pets through social media.

I was thrilled to watch the episode and then be able to pose questions to the two people featured. Hosted by celebrity animal lover Kristen Bell, the hour-long episode is broken into two parts, and here’s what you need to know about the 6th episode in the “Shelter Me” series.

Cat Town Café

The first half of the episode focuses on Cat Town Café in Oakland, the first-ever cat café in the United States and currently the only non-profit cat café in the country. Cat Town Café partners with its local shelter to provide an innovative way to showcase cats and boost adoptions.

Shelter Me is an inspiring series that celebrates the human-animal bond with uplifting stories about shelter pets. Shelter Me was created and is produced by Steven Latham. The project also includes a website – – which enables anyone to create and share profiles of shelter pets to help increase adoptions. Shelter Me works closely with other animal welfare organizations to organize effective spay-neuter and humane education programs and helps develop and implement life-saving projects directly at animal shelters.
