Last week, an adorable puppy, abandoned at the Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority, was rescued after she was found in a cardboard diaper box inside of the walk-in recycling trailer. According to the Dalton Daily Citizen, the Chihuahua puppy was rescued when an employee noticed that a box had not been broken down.
Tucked inside of the Huggies’ box was a very much alive, and thankfully healthy, pint-sized Chihuahua puppy. Employee Chester Bearden commented on the unusual find:
We have found a few cats in the area, but very seldom do we have pets that have been abandoned. We just sort of looked at each other and said, ‘Well, I wonder who would do that?’ The dog seemed to be in good health, and it was just like maybe someone couldn’t take care of it. Basically, it looked like maybe someone was being forced to get rid of it or couldn’t take care of it anymore.”
Bearden tried to find the energetic puppy a new home, but his efforts failed. Hoping to find an agency which could find her a loving, safe home, he turned to the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia. Staff at the shelter dubbed the puppy, “Martine,” (because she was found at the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard convenience center).
Martine will soon be joining a real family – Devon Brooks, Executive Director of Humane Society of Northwest Georgia, told Shelter Me:
We have had lots of interest in Martine – people have dropped by the shelter and filled out applications so she should have a home soon!
We are so thankful that we were contacted about her. She is so sweet and a shelter favorite.
Things could have ended much differently for this abandoned pup. Fortunately, thanks to the compassionate employees who found her, as well as the loving shelter staff who took her in, Martine will soon be enjoying life as a beloved companion.
