If you’ve been involved in the world of rescue in any form, you’ve probably also received pleas for donations of money, food, towels, beds, etc.
But have you ever been asked to donate that old lounge chair that you’ve been planning on dumping? Probably not. Yet a shelter in Galesburg, Illinois has taken the internet by storm by doing just that!
The Knox County Humane Society started on this path by posting that “Buster Brown would love a comfy seat after guarding the front desk all day.” He kept sitting in the chairs with the staff, and there really wasn’t room for dog & human.
And then they thought, why not give all the dogs in the shelter their own comfy chair? Word got out, and locals collected 11 chairs in one afternoon. Though neighbors were surprised when they were told the chairs were going to the shelter, they were happy to help the cause.
The collected chairs were transported to the shelter and placed in the dog runs. And soon after, this viral video was born!
Said Shelter Director Erin Buckmaster,
“They love it… they’re so much more relaxed.”
Shelter staff are well aware that the chairs will take a beating. But as they do, they’ll be replaced by others donated by the community.
For now, each has a comfy chair on which to nap and dream about bones and blue skies; a taste of home while they wait for their furever home. Staffers are ecstatic at the community’s response,
“Thank you to everyone who has shared and donated! The shelter pets send many licks and purrs of thanks!”
The Knox County Humane Society is located at 1855 Windish Drive, Galesburg, IL. If you want to go the usual route and help the shelter with a monetary donation, here’s their paypal link. All the dogs pictured here are up for adoption and you can check out their other adoptables on this link!
Check with your local shelter to see if they would be interested, and have the room, to implement this out-of-the-box idea!
